Arsenal Snatch Victory Over Newcastle in Stoppage Time

Arsenal secured a heart-stopping Premier League victory away at Newcastle United, thanks to a dramatic, late goal from Gabriel Magalhaes. This followed closely on the heels of Gabriel Martinelli's injury-time equalizer against Manchester City the previous week, showcasing the Gunners' newfound resilience under Mikel Arteta.

Newcastle had taken the lead in the first half through a powerful header from their club-record signing, Nic Woltemade, and appeared on course for only their second league win of the season. The Magpies defended resolutely until the final minutes.

Merino's Equalizer Sparks Late Drama

With just six minutes remaining, substitute Mikel Merino met a pinpoint cross from Declan Rice, flicking a glancing header past the goalkeeper and in off the far post. This leveled the score and set the stage for a tense finish.

Gabriel's Decisive Header

The drama reached its peak in the dying moments of added time. A teasing cross from Martin Odegaard caused chaos in the Newcastle box. Goalkeeper Nick Pope, who had previously made several outstanding saves, misjudged the flight of the ball, allowing Gabriel to rise unchallenged and head home the winning goal.

Speaking after the match, a delighted Bukayo Saka exclaimed, "Unbelievable! Nothing beats a late winner in football. I'm speechless, just so happy."

Arteta Praises Team's Resilience

Mikel Arteta echoed Saka's sentiments, adding, "I'm filled with pride, and I truly believe we deserved the win. Our performance, our intensity, the chances we created – we earned it. It was dramatic, but we deserved it. These experiences are crucial for growth. Overcoming such challenges elevates you to the next level. It was a fantastic opportunity to prove our mettle against a very tough opponent. Our consistency and quality were outstanding today."

VAR Controversy

The match wasn't without its talking points. In the first half, Arsenal were initially awarded a penalty when Nick Pope was deemed to have fouled Viktor Gyokeres. However, after a VAR review, the referee overturned his decision after viewing the pitchside monitor.

"After review, the Newcastle goalkeeper plays the ball and there is no foul. The final decision is drop ball," Gillett announced to the crowd.

Saka voiced his concerns about the penalty decision. "If VAR is there to correct clear and obvious errors, the time it took the referee to reach a decision suggests it wasn't so clear-cut. These things often seem to go against us, but we got what we deserved today, and that's all that matters."

Arteta agreed, adding, "If it's not a clear and obvious error, VAR shouldn't intervene. In this case, it wasn't a clear penalty."

Newcastle's Late Heartbreak

Despite Newcastle's efforts, Arsenal's pressure eventually told. Pope had earlier denied Eberechi Eze on two occasions, with Saka and Jurrien Timber also going close either side of the overturned penalty. Leandro Trossard was unlucky to see his shot strike the post.

For Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, the defeat was a painful one. Tino Livramento was stretchered off with an injury, adding to Howe's woes ahead of their Champions League clash with Union Saint-Gilloise.

With Alexander Isak, a constant thorn in Arsenal's side in recent years, now departed, Howe will have been pleased to see Woltemade find the net again. The German striker had scored the winner against Wolves earlier in the month and rose above Gabriel to powerfully head home Sandro Tonali's cross.

However, it wasn't enough to prevent another late defeat for Newcastle, reminiscent of their loss against Liverpool earlier in the season.

Howe acknowledged his team's shortcomings, saying, "Losing to two very late goals at home is tough to take. We have to admit that we weren't at our best. The effort was there, but the football wasn't quite good enough. The sheer number of corners they had built the pressure. Odegaard's introduction made a significant difference to Arsenal. The weight of pressure eventually told. No lack of effort, but the small details proved costly." The loss leaves Newcastle languishing in 15th position in the league table, with just one win and three draws from their opening six games.
